Seamus Murphy – Photographs
THE LITTLE MUSEUM OF DUBLIN JAN 21ST – FEB 26TH
Seamus Murphy is an Irish photographer based in London. A recipient of seven World Press photo awards, he is a regular contributor to many major international publications and has recently gained much acclaim for his collaborative work with the musician PJ Harvey. The Little Museum is proud to present Home is Another Place, Murphy’s first major exhibition of Irish photographs. This show opened on January 21, 2017.
Returning to Ireland after the recession to view a country and her capital changing dramatically, Murphy created a new collection of images that depict a country teeming with life, humour, absurdity, pathos, hardship, tenacity and love. At the heart of these images of our fellow countrymen and women, we find ourselves.
This exhibition expanded on Seamus’s critically-acclaimed 2016 monograph The Republic. Returning to Ireland after travelling with guerrilla fighters across Syria, Seamus caught us off-guard with stolen moments of hard (and often comical) reality.
These images told stories that go beyond politics, but also beyond the traditional media narrative. A republic is comprised of her people – in this remarkable new exhibition, Seamus Murphy pointed his camera directly at us.
